スター・ウォーズの「ホイルス銀河史」とは何ぞや

皆さんスター・ウォーズは好きですか?今回は、普通にスター・ウォーズを楽しむぶんには必要ないけど、より深く楽しむには知っておいて損はない言葉「ホイルス銀河史」についてのご紹介。

ホイルス銀河史は英語で書くとThe Journal of Whillsとなります。Whillsをどうやって読んだらホイルスになるんだ...と思うけれどもなぜか小説とかだとホイルスと書くらしい。しかもjournalはだいたい日誌や日記と訳されることが多いからThe Journal of Whillsをそのまま訳すとウィルの日誌?まあ今回はホイルス銀河史で統一することにして、一体これがスター・ウォーズのどこに登場しているのでしょうか。実は映画には一切登場していません!じゃあどこにあるのかというと、こちら。

小説版です。小説版は映画公開よりも早い1977年12月に初めて刊行され、映画のヒットと共に小説も大ヒットしました。そして小説には映画では語られなかったプロローグという章があり、銀河共和国の崩壊や帝国の勃興など後にエピソード1、2、3で語られる前日譚が描かれています。これらが「ホイルス銀河史」からの引用として扱われているのです。

元々映画を作ったジョージ・ルーカスはこのスター・ウォーズが「ホイルス銀河史」に収められた物語であると考えながらストーリーを作っていきました。ルーカスは、R2-D2がスカイウォーカー家に関する歴史を集めそれをエンドアの戦いの100年後に「ホイルス銀河史」に収め、その物語を私たちはスター・ウォーズとして見ている...というもの。どうです、なかなか夢のある話だと思いません?

しかし、このルーカスの考えた設定はこともあろうかルーカスフィルムの人々によって受け入れられず、リーランド・チーというルーカスフィルムの人から「この設定は正史(正確に言うとレジェンズ世界の正史)ではない」と言われます。まあ確かにこの設定があるとスピンオフが作りづらくなっちゃうもんね。でもやっぱりルーカスはR2-D2がスター・ウォーズの語り部であると考えているらしく、映画の冒頭に流れる黄色い文字、オープニング・クロールもR2-D2が語っているのではとどこかで言ってた気がする。

さて、そんな中2012年ルーカスフィルムがディズニーに買収され、新たなエピソードの製作にルーカスは関わらなくなってしまいました。これまでルーカスはエピソード7以降の流れについて色々と語っていたのですがそれらが守られる保証は1ミリもありません。例えば過去にルーカスは「C-3POとR2-D2は映画9作品全てに登場する唯二のキャラクターになるだろう」と語っていましたが、それもそうなるとは限りません。ちなみに現在9分の7で皆勤賞なのはC-3POとR2-D2、そしてエピソード7で声だけながらも登場したオビ=ワン・ケノービがいます。なのでルーカスの「ホイルス銀河史」が再び登場するとは限らない...のですが、なんだか登場しそうな気がします。

なぜかというとこれまた小説版のフォースの覚醒で「ホイルス銀河史」からの引用という形で詩の一説が書かれてます。さらに「アフターマス:帝国の終焉」という小説で「ホイルス銀河史」が登場し、エピソード8/最後のジェダイの予告編には何やら怪しげな本が...

さらにローグ・ワン/スター・ウォーズ・ストーリーにはウィルズの守護者(Guardians of the Whills)としてベイズやチアルートが登場します。f:id:stacyperry109b:20170814124148j:plainルーカスが考えた設定が、ルーカスがいなくなってからの方がよく使われているということが何だか不思議ですが、おそらく今のルーカスフィルムの人は「ホイルス銀河史」を気に入っているような気がするので、今後もこれが登場する...ような気がする。

Rise of the Isle of the Lost - ディセンダント2の前日譚

先日「Rise of the Isle of the Lost」という英語の小説を購入し、無事読破したので、せっかくだから読書感想文書いてみますね。この本はディズニーチャンネルオリジナルムービーの「ディセンダント2」の前日譚のような内容で、やっぱり映画との関わりがすごくありそうな予感!(まだ映画を観てないから予感としか言えないんだけど)

この本ではマルやイヴィなどお馴染みメンツ、ベンやロニーのお偉いさんメンツ、そして今回初登場のアースラの娘ウーマをはじめとするロスト島の海賊メンツの3チームのお話が同時進行で進みます。マルたちは前作「Return to the Isle of the Lost」という小説で登場したヴィランズの武器を破壊するという任務、ベンたちは「アラジン」の世界であるアグラバーと「ムーラン」の世界である北魏との間に起きたいざこざを解決する任務に出ます(実はそのいざこざっていうのは大したことないんだけどね)。そんな中、アリエルの姪のアラベラが、彼女のおじいちゃんことトリトン王の持つ槍を紛失してしまいます。しかもその槍の場所はロスト島のすぐそば!ウーマたちはトリトン王の槍を使えばロスト島を脱出できると考え槍を探し始めます。そんなことはさせない!とマルたちはウーマの企みを阻止しに向かうのです...。

さて、今回の小説で重要なポイントは、裏表紙にBased on Descendants 2と書かれていること。つまりディセンダント2の脚本を見ながらこの本が書かれているわけで、映画との繋がりが無いわけがない!確かに映画で重要な役割を果たすであろうウーマ、ハリー、ギルの海賊3人組。この小説ではその3人がどうやって共に行動するようになったのか、そしてマルとウーマの間にある深い対立のわけも詳しく描かれてるから、きっとストーリーを理解しやすくなるんじゃないかな。

そして映画ではおそらく語られない、ディセンダント世界をより深く知ることができる描写も多数あるのが魅力。例えば映画「ファンタジア」に登場するイェン・シッドもディセンダント世界に存在しており、ロスト島で先生をやっていたり、R.O.A.R.と呼ばれるスポーツが存在していたり(パルクールとフェンシングが混ざったスポーツだって。意味わかんないね)。ちなみにイェン・シッドがロスト島にいるのは別に悪人だからとかではなく、ロスト島の子供にもきちんとした教育を受けさせたいから自主的にロスト島にいるんだってさ。そしてインターン生が"魔法使いの弟子"としてイェン・シッドと一緒に過ごしてたりとか、もうディセンダント世界は発想の勝利みたいな設定がたくさんあって最高。

ということでディセンダントの映画を観た人ならとっても想像、理解しやすい作品なので、英語が分かる人、分かるようになりたい人は是非読んでみてね!
